In NSW every electrician must hold a licence. On top of that, electricians who work on the connection between your property and the electricity network need extra accreditation under the Accredited Service Provider (ASP) scheme. Level 2 is the accreditation for that low-voltage connection work.
Work a regular licensed electrician can do
- Power points, switches, lights and ceiling fans
- Rewiring and renovation wiring
- Smoke alarms and safety switches
- Replacing circuits and equipment inside the switchboard
- Fault finding inside the property
Work that needs a Level 2 ASP
- Connecting, disconnecting or reconnecting a property to the network
- Installing or repairing overhead or underground service lines
- Work at the point of attachment and on consumer mains connections
- Installing and relocating meters and metering equipment
- Private power poles and private overhead lines
- Energising a new installation
Why hiring one contractor for both saves time
Many jobs cross the line. A switchboard upgrade may need new consumer mains. A renovation may need the meter box moved. A demolition needs a formal disconnection. If your electrician is not Level 2 accredited, they have to book a separate ASP, and your job waits on two schedules.

How to check an electrician’s credentials
